Usually, a child who has a bowel movement fewer than three times a week and whose stools are large, hard, dry, painful and difficult to pass is constipated. Constipation is normal once in a while but if it lasts for two weeks or more it&#8217;s called chronic constipation, and you should see your paediatrician.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to know\u00a0 your toddler is constipated<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stomachache<\/li>\n<li>Bloating<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n<li>General crankiness<\/li>\n<li>Crying or screaming during bowel movements<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding the toilet<\/li>\n<li>Smears or bits of liquid stool in the diaper or underwear<\/li>\n<li>Large-diameter stools that may obstruct the toilet<\/li>\n<li>Pain while having a bowel movement<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n<li>Blood on the surface of a hard stool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why is my child getting constipated?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drinking too much milk<\/li>\n<li>Eating too many other low-fibre foods<\/li>\n<li>Toilet anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Dehydration<\/li>\n<li>Lack of activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When can I see a doctor?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Constipation in children usually isn&#8217;t serious. However, chronic constipation may lead to complications or signal an underlying condition.
