The bodies produce antibodies that are supposed to protect against foreign body but this time they actually attack the body own tissues. In Myasthenia Gravis, this occurs at the level where the nerves and muscles communicate called Neuromuscular junction. This is what causes the weakness of some of the muscles observed in Myasthenia Gravis. Severity depends on how bad it is. There are some other mild variations of the same disease with the cause but this is the simplest explanation in a layman term I can give.
