What is a birth control implant?

A contraceptive implant is an implantable medical device used for the purpose of birth control. The implant may depend on the timed release of hormones to hinder ovulation or sperm development. One of the most common implants is the Implanon NXT, it is a small, flexible, silicone rod (just about the size of a matchstick) that contains 68mg of etonogestrel and can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years. It is a long-acting reversible contraception.

How does this implant work?

This implant continuously releases very small doses of this hormone per day and also contains a small amount of barium sulphate which renders it visible under X-ray for easy removal. As a contraceptive, Implanon NXT works by;

  • Preventing ovulation (egg release from the ovary)
  • Thickening of the mucus of the cervix so that sperm cannot enter the uterus (womb)
  • Changing the lining of the uterus, making it unsuitable for pregnancy

Why should I use an implant?

  • It is Highly effective (99.9%)
  • Long-acting and cost-effective (lasts three years)
  • Reversible and rapid return to usual fertility
  • A small percentage of women have no vaginal bleeding
  • Less period pain for some women
  • No pills – no injections
  • Little or no infection cases
