Once you are ready to start a family, waiting is the last thing you want to do although Mother Nature has a hand in the timing, there are some things you can do or not do to help increase your chances of getting pregnant fast.

Get a preconception checkup

Before you officially start trying, get a checkup. Ask your doctor about prenatal vitamins that have folic acid, which helps protect against some birth defects, such as spina bifida Folic acid works during the early stages of pregnancy, so that’s why it’s important to make sure you’re getting enough folic acid even before you get pregnant.

Go Off Your contraceptives and start planning for a healthy pregnancy

Once you stop using contraception you may become pregnant at any point if you are having sex. To aid pregnancy, it is best to stop contraception and your plans for pregnancy.

Have sex before or during ovulation

You can only get pregnant during the ‘fertile window’ in the menstrual cycle. Chances of getting pregnant are dramatically increased if you have sex on the day of ovulation, or two days before that. Ovulation occurs each month when an egg is released from one of the ovaries. Occasionally, more than one egg is released, usually within 24 hours of the first egg. At the same time, the lining of the womb begins to thicken and the mucus in the cervix becomes thinner so that sperm can swim through it more easily. The egg begins to travel slowly down the fallopian tube. If a man and a woman have recently had sex, the egg may be fertilised here by the man’s sperm. The lining of the womb is now thick enough for the egg to be implanted in it after it has been fertilised. Use our ovulation calculator

Take prenatal vitamins

It’s a good idea to begin taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid even before you conceive. These vitamins increase the chances of you getting pregnant, they also help protect against birth defects such as spina bifida.

Sex Session Don’ts

Certain sexual positions often are thought to be ideal for conception, while others are said to be less ideal. In actuality, changing it up can make intercourse more exciting for both partners, which leads to better conditions for conception. The position itself does not significantly alter your chances of conceiving but avoid using water-based lubricants and lubricants that contain spermicide they can reduce your partner’s sperm motility by 60 to 100 per cent or kill sperm cells.
