2023 Diaspora Campaign: Thriving In The UK As A Pregnant And New African Mum

Upholding its core value to support African mums, Babymigo launched the maiden edition of the diaspora campaign for African mums titled “Thriving in the UK as a Pregnant and African Mum.” The event is a redefining testament to Babymigo’s impactful strides in providing unmatched support, essential tools, and invaluable resources to all expecting and African mums across the globe.

The event started with a reverberating opening remark from the visionary CEO and Co-founder of Babymigo, Kemi Olawoye. She welcomed guests and panelists to the novel webinar on addressing critical issues faced by African mums in the UK. She further expressed her palpable commitment to ensuring all African mums worldwide have accessible and inclusive care for themselves and their children.

The event was unfurled into two thought-evoking sessions. The first session featured a heart-to-heart mom panel comprising Nigerian mums currently in the UK, and the second session was the medical panel comprising NHS-certified OB-GYN, a paediatrician, nurses, maternal care researchers and midwives.

The mom panel, which focused on the shared experiences of mums in the UK, was an intimate and relatable session. This panel saw notable content creators: Tochi Esther, a digital content creator and lawyer, Bukola Italumhe, a content creator, and Toluwaleye Odunsi, an entrepreneur and Founder of Folabami Fashion.

The three charismatic mums shared their experiences living in the UK. They expatiated on the need to be open for adequate support from communities. They discussed maternal and mental health and outsourcing help to share the caregiving burden. At the end of their session, they emphasised the importance of instilling cultural values when nurturing African children. They encouraged mothers to be proud of their roots in raising African children in the UK.

The medical panel consisted of Dr. Ojone Illah, an NHS OBGYN, Abimbola Akano, an NHS staff registered nurse, Olajumoke Adebayo, a Global Maternal Health Researcher, and Oyinlola Olatunji, a Registered Children Nurse, The ChildrenTrust. The health practitioners reinstated the need for African mums to work and align with their midwives and other health care officers assigned to them.

They unequivocally educated mothers on the distinctiveness of the UK healthcare system and what to expect as a first-time mum. They armed mums with preventive measures for common illnesses and how to treat and prevent them to fully safeguard their children.

The second panelist ended their discussion with an impactful and engaging Q&A session. Audiences were left informed and empowered, eagerly anticipating the next diaspora campaign. Kemi Olawoye ended the session with a decisive vote of thanks to the panelist and the audience for attending.

This wasn't just an event but a transformative and educational experience. If you seek a deeper dive into this empowering webinar, the video is available on YouTube.
