Most eye discharge are due to viral infection. Do ensure your baby is seen by a paediatrician or an ophthalmologist who will do an Eye Swab

Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic indicated in both adults and children for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by chloramphenicol susceptible organisms including : Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus haemolyticus, Morax-axenfeld, Klebsiella/Enterobacter species and others. If for any reason you doubt your doctors prescription, it's best you seek clarity from him or her. If you are still not comfortable then take your baby to another hospital. Please note that the doctor who physically examined your baby is in the best position to prescribe medications.
