How can someone know if a baby of 3 weeks have jundice? What are the possible effects of jundice? And how can it be cured?
This is very important especially for those of you who deliver your newborns in hospitals without Paediatricians and doctors who specifically check out the baby before discharge. It is also important if you are discharged from the hospital before 48 – 72 hours of your baby’s life. This is because most jaundice develop after the 2 -3 days of life and most new mums don’t know HOW to detect Jaundice. Experienced Mums and Grandmas are better at it but they also miss it at times
I want to why change of blood causes abnormal growth for baby that have jaundice at birth
It is not the change of blood that causes the abnormal development.
It is the very high jaundice that stain the brain, and it is to prevent this abnormality that the change of blood is usually done but sometimes it is too late in some children. The earlier the better the jaundice is detected and treated

Please what is the cause of jaundice in a new born baby?
Jaundice is actually due to high level of a substance called BILIRUBIN in the blood of the Newborn.

It is this Bilirubin that is actually yellow in colour…..and it is the staining of the eyes and skin by bilirubin that causes the yellowish discolouration known as Jaundice.

In fact another name for jaundice in newborn is Neonatal Hyperbilirubinaemia…..too much bilirubin.

Remember this bilirubin, because all problems from Jaundice is the bilirubin and all treatment for jaundice in the newborn is to remove bilirubin or at least to make it safe because bilirubin is toxic or poisonous to the brain of a newborn

You need to just to be sure the jaundice has cleared completely. A repeat should have been done 48 hours after discharge according to standard practice.

However, in the rare cases or reasons when breast milk is not available, we do give either intravenous fluids if temporarily or breast milk substitutes aka formula. We know we can and we do. However we don't want mothers quickly rushing to BMS at every little initial challenges with breastfeeding!

Can Jaundice be prevented in the newborns? The answer is Yes!
There are some causes of Jaundice that can be prevented while for others, there is no way to prevent them but secondary prevention can be done by ensuring the jaundice is promptly detected and treated so as not to lead to the feared complication of Kernicterus i.e. brain damage in the newborns.
Causes of Jaundice in the Newborns that can be prevented include:
1. Rhesus Incompatibility
Jaundice due to Rhesus incompatibility can be prevented by Rhesus Negative Mums taking RHOGAM injection within 72 hours of delivery of a Rhesus positive baby or loss of a pregnancy either to abortion/miscarriages. This will help ensure the next baby will not develop Jaundice
2. Prematurity
All steps and efforts to prevent preterm deliveries including good antenatal care will help prevent newborn jaundice secondary to prematurity.
3. Infections including the torches.
