Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACTs) like artemether and amodiaquine which are contained in antimalarials like Coartem, Artequick, e.t.c. act by releasing oxidative derivatives in the body to mop up the parasites, but vitamin C acts as an antioxidant which counters the effect of the oxidative derivatives and so the antimalarial effect is not fully achieved. So, please avoid taking antimalarials, Vitamin C (in any form) and blood tonic (iron) together. When you have finished taking the antimalarial (usually 3days), you can commence your vitamin C and blood tonic.Hope you learned something new! Vitamin C, on the other hand, whether gotten from fruits like orange, grape, fruit juice, or tablets sold in pharmacies, helps with the absoption of iron which goes mostly to the liver and blood. This may be good for a patient who has anaemia as it helps to build up blood in the body, but it is detrimental to people who have malaria as the malaria parasites will have more iron to feed on and growfurther. Also, Vitamin C helps young malaria parasites grow to maturity in the body.

Are you in the habit of taking Vitamin C and Blood tonic with the drugs you take? Please don’t do so whenever you have malaria. The liver is an important organ in the life process of malaria parasites in the body and is rich in Iron. When iron supplements or blood tonics and capsules are taken, they accumulate more in the liver where malaria parasites multiply very favorably since they depend a lot on iron for their multiplication. In fact, these parasites also attack red blood cells and destroy them (haemolysis) just to get more iron. This in turn causes inflammatory symptoms that present as malaria; and that’s why malaria, left untreated, will gradually result in anaemia (low concentration of red blood cells in the body).

Cont.5. If your baby has jaundice, no amount of glucose water will make that jaundice go away. Please note, JAUNDICE ON THE FIRST DAY OF LIFE IS NEVER EVER A GOOD THING. GO TO THE HOSPITAL ASAP6. Once heard a father telling a mom that because the baby cried so much earlier in the day, to make sure she administers paracetamol so the said baby will not run a temperature and fall sick. Mind you the baby has not ran any temperature. Paracetamol Abuse can lead to liver failure and bleeding from everywhere.Let us join hands in educating our sisters, mothers, aunties and the men to help debunk these myths.

Cont.4. SPIRITUAL HEALING. Everyone believing that all diseases can be cured with prayers even HIV. I believe in God, please don’t get me wrong, but I am yet to see a disease cured just with prayers without any drugs given. If God in his infinite wisdom gave man the knowledge and wisdom to create drugs, then surely, drugs are not meant to be viewed as therapy for those with little faith. Having that belief that can get your child killed.

Cont.3. TRADITIONAL DRUGS ARE DANGEROUS. There is no other way to say this, adults have gotten away with drinking bucket loads of herbal drugs just because their kidneys and liver are matured enough to deal with that junk. Sadly, for children, it is not the same and their tiny immature kidneys and liver fail when faced with such an herculean task of clearing the toxins their body is riddled with.

Cont.2. Rubbing of a dark goo in the middle of a newborn head scalp to cure the opening there. That opening is absolutely normal and is called an ANTERIOR FONTANELLE. Infact, what will be abnormal is if your baby’s head has no opening, and then we will be dealing with a medical condition called CRANIOSYNOSTOSIS which trust me, in its most severe form leads to mental retardation.

Cont. And if you google benign neonatal skin diseases, you will be amazed at how many they are, they are absolutely benign and go after a short while with no problems whatsoever. The most common being ERYTHEMA TOXICUM. So mothers, your newborn having rashes and stooling so many times a day while on breastmilk is absolutely benign.

Cont.1. There is nothing like “nla” and “nta”. I must confess that up till now, I still don’t understand the true meaning of these two terms since it is interpreted differently by many. But from the general opinion, nla and nta are skin lesions and excessive passage of golden brown stools observed in babies. For these, parents go to traditionalists who give them drugs to cure this only to come down with liver and kidney failure due to its toxicity and many die.Oh, and by the way, if a child is on exclusive breast feeding, up to 10x of stooling per day is normal.

Would love to share debunking of Myths by apractising pediatrician (Not by me). There are several beliefs that have stood the test of time that we come across daily in our practice. While I respect cultural beliefs and differences inherent in our society, the truth still remains that some of these beliefs are killing our babies. Here are some of the beliefs that need to be debunked

This can be useful to some of us. There is love in sharing. How to make baby cereal at home. The grains used are: rice, millet and guinea corn or soyabean. Soak all for 2 days, then u wash, dry. Fry with a non stick pan, then u blend it smoothly. After blending you sieve to remove the particles then ur cereal is ready. Now to make your cereal, put ur water on fire allow to boil, get a cup and put in the quantity you want, add cold water and mix into a smooth paste. Add the paste into the hot water and allow to cook for some minutes. Make sure its not too thick. Bring the pan down and allow to cool add your baby milk and feed your baby. You can garnish your cereal with fruits, crayfish. Happy baby equals to a happy mum!

A tip I was given when I was 9 months pregnant and has been helping me so far. I was told to make a type of PAP that helped me breastfeed with ease because my breast was so full of juicy breastmilk. I feel I should share it with my fellow mothers and soon to be mothers. 4 days before your due date soak white maize, white guinea corn, millet together in a bowl. On the 4th day grind smoothly and sieve properly. Break fresh coconut and add the coconut water to the pap each time you make the pap that serves as the sweetner and no need to add sugar but you can add milk if you want or you can blend your coconut squeeze our the milk and use in your pap. EBF would be much easier with these. The pap is nutritious for both mother and child.

The typical symptoms of a Candida infection (also known as thrush) of the nipples are: 1) Nipple pain which begins after a period of pain free nursing. Though there are a few other causes of nipple pain which begin later, Candida infection is definitely the most common. The nipple pain of Candida may begin without an interval of pain free nursing, however.2) Burning nipple pain which continues throughout the feeding, sometimes continuing after the feeding is over.3) Pain in the breast which is “shooting” and which goes through to the mother’s back and shoulder. This pain is usually worse toward the end of the feeding, and worsens still more after the feeding is over. It also tends to be much worse at night. This pain may occur without any nipple pain.

SCIENTIFIC NAME : Jatropha tajorensisFAMILY : EuphorbiaceaeCOMMON NAMES :Catholic vegetable, Iyana-Ipaja (Yoruba), Ugu-Oyibo (Igbo), “hospital too far” (Pidgin English)PART(S ) USED : LeavesI made a research on the leaves of this tree and was amazed at the importance of this leaf.My oh my! I put this leaf to test and it didn't fail. My aunty was in the hospital, and needed blood. I didn't know the importance of this leaf in my garden. I washed the leaves and squeezed out the water and rushed to the hospital to give her. She slept for 2 hours and when she woke up she was so strong and healed. She was discharged this evening. I decided I must share this with those who care to know because it might save a life someday.
