There are times when big navel or more properly called umbilical hernia is a problem even in Nigeria.
Parents are usually reassured for umbilical hernias in children as most will typically close spontaneously by age 5 years.
However, hernias that persist beyond this age or defects larger than 2 cm are indications for surgical repair. Also if it becomes obstructed or strangulated (hard and very painful symptoms), it has to be operated as an emergency.
