What is the difference between SF and SS Sickle Cell babies and how does one care for them? My 3years old and 1 year have the same sickle Cell status - SF genotype
Haemoglobin F is the fetal haemoglobin present in babies in the womb. It's level usually high shortly after birth and gradually reduces as a child grows to very low levels in adults
In some children with Sickle Cell anaemia the HbF levels may remain persistently high and thats why it is written as HbSF. However such a child is still SS (Sickle cell anaemia) but with high levels of HbF. It is a good thing though as such children are more protected against crisis and other complications of Sickle cell anaemia
